Surfshark Starter vs Surfshark One: Which Plan Should You Buy in 2026?
Starter is Surfshark's VPN alone; One adds Surfshark Antivirus, Alert breach monitoring, scam protection and Search on the same unlimited-device plan. Who should pay for the higher tier, from Surfshark's own pages and AV-TEST's published scores.
Surfshark Starter vs Surfshark One: which plan should you buy?
Buy Surfshark One if you do not already pay for antivirus or breach monitoring: on the 24-month term Surfshark lists One at $2.79 a month against $2.49 for Starter (checked October 2026), and the extra buys Surfshark Antivirus, Alert, scam protection and Search on top of the same unlimited-device VPN. Buy Starter if you only want the VPN, already run a security suite, or plan to pay monthly, where the gap between the tiers is larger. One+ is a separate decision, because it adds Incogni's data removal.
Every price and feature below is quoted from Surfshark's own pricing page, plan guide, product pages and trust center, with the antivirus scores taken from AV-TEST's published results and the sceptical framing from EFF, rather than first-hand use. One fact decides more of these purchases than any other: the antivirus inside One runs on Windows, macOS and Android only, so an iPhone-and-iPad household would be paying for a bundle it cannot fully install.
What both plans share
Surfshark's plan guide is clear that the VPN itself does not change between tiers: "All plans include the same core VPN features — auto connect, kill switch, split tunneling, and more — so the best pick depends on which extras you need." Starter and One both give you unlimited simultaneous connections, Alternative ID (a generated persona and a masked email address for sign-ups), Dynamic MultiHop, Bypasser split tunneling, the CleanWeb ad and cookie pop-up blocker, and what Surfshark describes as 4,500+ RAM-only servers in 100 countries. Both carry the 30-day money-back guarantee.
The privacy claims are shared too. Surfshark's trust center says it keeps a strict no-logs policy and that "Audits by Deloitte in 2023 and 2025 have also verified Surfshark's adherence to its no-logs policy". That is Surfshark's statement about a named auditor, which is how this site treats every no-logs claim; our roundup of VPN audits sets it beside the other providers' records. The same page says Surfshark is based in the Netherlands and runs RAM-only servers. None of this differs between Starter and One, so if the VPN is all you came for, the comparison ends at the price.

The prices, term by term
Surfshark's pricing page (checked October 2026) shows the 24-month deals as $2.49 a month for Starter, billed as $67.23 for the first 27 months, and $2.79 a month for One, billed as $75.33 for the first 27 months; One+ is $4.49 a month, billed as $121.23. VAT may apply on top. Surfshark's plan guide, which it dates to July 30, 2026, fills in the shorter terms: Starter at $3.39 a month on the 12-month plan ($40.68 in total) and $16.45 month to month; One at $3.59 a month yearly and $18.95 monthly; One+ at $7.49 yearly and $21.85 monthly.
| Plan | 24 months (per month) | 12 months (per month) | 1 month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $2.49 | $3.39 | $16.45 |
| One | $2.79 | $3.59 | $18.95 |
| One+ | $4.49 | $7.49 | $21.85 |
Two billing details from Surfshark's own FAQ matter more than the headline rate. The 2-year plan "is billed once at the beginning of your subscription and then annually after it expires", and on renewal "you will be charged the applicable renewal price", a figure the pricing page does not publish, so put the renewal date somewhere you will see it. The other detail is the trial: Surfshark says the 7-day free trial is available when purchasing through the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, and that trial accounts are limited to 3 devices until the trial period is over.
Is the antivirus worth paying for?
This is the real question, because Antivirus is the part of the One bundle that looks most like a product you would otherwise buy. AV-TEST, the independent lab whose results Surfshark cites, lists Surfshark Antivirus in its home-user Windows results with a June 2026 score of 6 for protection, 4.5 for performance and 6 for usability, marked certified; its June 2025 round scored 6, 5.5 and 5.5, and its June 2024 round 6, 5.5 and 6. Surfshark's antivirus page presents the current scores on a scale of 6 and states the compatibility limits plainly: "You can use Surfshark Antivirus on Windows 10 and later systems, macOS versions starting with Big Sur 11 and onwards, and Android devices running OS 10 or later." It adds that the product is not compatible with Windows ARM or with Android devices that are not 64-bit.
So the practical rule is about hardware. A Windows laptop or desktop that currently relies on the operating system's built-in protection gets a certified second layer for the difference in price. A Mac household gets a product that runs from Big Sur onward. An iPhone, iPad or Chromebook household gets nothing from this part of the bundle, and should weigh One on Alert and the scam tools alone. EFF's general warning about VPN extras applies as well: bundled tools, in its words about ad and tracker blocking, "provide you with much less control than" dedicated ones, so if you already pay for a security suite you trust, One would duplicate it.
Alert and scam protection: useful, but check what you already have
Surfshark Alert, per its product page, "allows monitoring multiple accounts, credit cards, and IDs" and can "Scan IDs from over 90 countries", sending a notification when your details appear in a breach. Surfshark's plan guide says One's scam protection adds an email scam checker that flags phishing and scam emails and a scam text feature that flags scam text messages such as fake deliveries. Some banks, card issuers and password managers already offer breach alerts; if yours does, Alert is a convenience rather than a new layer. Note too that One includes no password manager, which for most households is the more important purchase. Our household password manager guide covers the cheap options, and our piece on whether a VPN is still worth it next to a password manager explains how the two tools divide the work.
Who should buy which
- Buy Starter if you want the VPN alone, you already run antivirus and breach monitoring you trust, or you will pay month to month, where Surfshark's own table shows the two tiers further apart than on the 24-month deal. See current price for Starter.
- Buy One if you have Windows, Mac or Android devices without paid antivirus and nobody is watching your email addresses for breaches. On the 24-month term Surfshark's pricing page lists it at $2.79 a month against Starter's $2.49 (checked October 2026). See current price for One.
- Consider One+ only if you want Incogni's data-broker removal, which Surfshark's pricing page says is available for US, UK, EU, Swiss and Canadian residents only, and if you live where its identity theft coverage applies (US residents except New York State, per the same page). Our guide to what data removal costs compares the stand-alone services.
- Look elsewhere if you want a different brand's bundle: NordVPN, Surfshark's sister company under Nord Security, sells tiers of its own; see current price and read our NordVPN versus Surfshark comparison before deciding.
Whichever tier you choose, EFF's reminder applies to the whole category: "Remember that a claim is not a guarantee, so be sure you verify these claims." Surfshark's audits, jurisdiction and RAM-only servers are good signs; they are also the same on both plans.
FAQ
Can I upgrade from Starter to One later?
Yes. Surfshark's plan guide says you can upgrade at any time from your account dashboard, and that switching from Starter to One or One+ adds Antivirus, Alert and Incogni without requiring a new subscription. Starting on Starter and upgrading only if you find a use for the extras is a reasonable path.
Does Surfshark One work on iPhone?
The VPN does, but the antivirus does not, because Surfshark lists it for Windows 10 and later, macOS from Big Sur 11 and Android 10 or later only. If every device in your home is an Apple phone or tablet, price One on the alerts and scam tools alone, and lean towards Starter.
Is Surfshark One cheaper than buying antivirus separately?
Surfshark does not sell the antivirus on its own, so there is no stand-alone price to compare; its pricing page lists One at $2.79 a month on the 24-month term against $2.49 for Starter (checked October 2026). Whether the step up is a saving depends on whether you would otherwise buy antivirus at all. If you would not, Starter is the saving.
What is the difference between Surfshark One and One+?
One+ is One plus Incogni, the data-broker removal service, and, for eligible new US customers, identity theft coverage. Surfshark's pricing page lists One+ at $4.49 a month on the 24-month term, billed as $121.23 for the first 27 months, and notes that Incogni is available to US, UK, EU, Swiss and Canadian residents only.
