Best VPN for a Family With Lots of Devices in 2026

9 min readBy The VPN Sheet Editorial
Last updated:Published:

Surfshark's unlimited connections, NordVPN's 10-device cap, WiTopia's 8 connections and the CloakBox router, compared from each vendor's own pages with prices checked October 2026, plus EFF's checklist for choosing between them.

What's the best VPN for a family with lots of devices?

For most families the answer is Surfshark: every plan allows unlimited simultaneous connections, the Starter tier lists at $2.49 a month on the 24-month term (checked October 2026), and it can run on a router for TVs and consoles without an app. NordVPN is the alternative if you prefer its apps, but one account stops at 10 devices. If the real problem is a house full of smart TVs and consoles, a VPN router such as WiTopia's CloakBox covers everything on the Wi-Fi without counting devices.

This page is assembled from the vendors' own pricing and support pages, EFF's Surveillance Self-Defense guide and the other named sources, rather than first-hand use. We judged the four services this site can link on three things that matter in a shared household: the connection cap, the price after the first term, and whether there is a route for devices that cannot run an app.

Surfshark: unlimited connections and the lowest family price

Surfshark's pricing page states the policy without qualification: "Unlimited devices Connect & use all your family devices simultaneously." Its FAQ adds that unlimited simultaneous device connections mean you can protect your whole household for the cost of a single VPN subscription. There is no separate family tier to buy; Surfshark's own plan guide says all plans allow unlimited device connections, so the cheapest Starter plan is, in effect, the family plan.

Prices checked October 2026: Starter is $2.49 a month if you take the 24-month term, and Surfshark bills that as $67.23 for the first 27 months, with VAT possibly on top. Surfshark's plan guide (its own date stamp reads July 30, 2026) lists the Starter 12-month plan at $3.39 a month ($40.68 in total) and month-to-month Starter at $16.45. One caveat for households that like to try before they pay: Surfshark says the free trial can only be used on 3 devices until the trial period ends, so the unlimited policy applies once you are a paying subscriber.

Two more details matter for a family. Surfshark's pricing page says you can connect through your router or set up a manual connection for gaming consoles and smart TVs that do not support its apps, which is how you cover a PlayStation or an older television. And the unlimited policy does not change what a VPN is for: the privacy benefit on the twentieth device is the same as on the first, and none of it makes anyone in the house anonymous. See current price for the plan lengths on offer, and read our head-to-head on the two Nord Security VPNs if you are weighing them against each other.

NordVPN: 10 devices, with a catch on shared servers

NordVPN's support center is explicit: "You can connect up to 10 devices to a single NordVPN account at the same time." For a couple with a phone, a laptop and a tablet each, ten is plenty; for a household of five with a games console and two televisions, it is tight. There is also a lesser-known condition on the same page: devices connected to the same server must use different protocols, which NordVPN says means a total of five devices can be connected to one server at the same time. The apps choose servers automatically, so most families will never notice, but it is worth knowing before everyone in the house picks the same city.

NordVPN's answer for bigger households is the router: "If you have even more devices, you can set up your router with our VPN." The support page notes that the router uses only one device slot while the VPN protects all the devices connected to the network. That makes NordVPN workable for a large family, but it moves the setup work onto you, and a router-level VPN sends every guest's traffic through the tunnel as well.

We do not print a NordVPN price on this page because nordvpn.com would not serve its pricing page to our reader, and we will not copy a figure we cannot verify. See current price to compare the plan lengths yourself. On the no-logs question, rely on our roundup of independent VPN audits rather than any vendor's banner.

WiTopia personalVPN: 8 connections, and the CloakBox for everything else

WiTopia's personalVPN is the smaller, long-running service this site has reviewed before. Its own comparison page says you can "enjoy up to 8 simultaneous connections per subscription", which beats most per-device caps but is not unlimited. Pricing on witopia.com (checked October 2026) is unusually plain: $9.99 billed monthly, $3.99 a month on the 12-month plan (billed $47.88, then every 12 months), or $2.49 a month on the 24-month plan, billed $59.76, which WiTopia says then defaults to $47.88 every 12 months because its payment processors only allow 12-month renewals. WiTopia states that it does not monitor or capture logs of your internet activity; that is the vendor's statement, and we found no named independent audit of it on the pages we read.

The more interesting product for a device-heavy home is the CloakBox: a pre-configured ASUS Wi-Fi 6 router sold with the VPN service and support included. The 12-month version lists at $299, renewing at $99.99 a year after the first term, and the 24-month version at $399. WiTopia says any device that has Wi-Fi can connect to the CloakBox and share always-on VPN access, which sidesteps every per-device cap in this guide. Our CloakBox versus VPN app comparison weighs the trade-offs of the router route. Check the price at WiTopia for the app plans.

OrionVPN: the lowest headline price, and why it is not our first pick

OrionVPN is the budget option this site can link, and its pricing page (checked October 2026) is clear about money: $12.99 billed monthly, $4.99 a month on the 1-year plan ($59.88 billed annually), or $3.09 a month on the 24-month promotion. On devices, the FAQ says one account "covers multiple devices—including phones, laptops, tablets, and more", but it publishes no number, which is exactly the figure a large family needs before buying. The page also says the subscription auto-renews at the standard rate after 24 months unless you cancel, and it mentions zero logging without naming an independent audit. Treat that as a claim; EFF's guide puts the general rule plainly: "A VPN company might log your data if it doesn't specifically rule it out in its privacy policy." If price is the whole decision, check the price at OrionVPN; for a family we would still start with Surfshark's published unlimited policy.

What else to check before paying for two years

EFF's Surveillance Self-Defense guide to choosing a VPN, last reviewed July 28, 2026, is the best neutral checklist we know, and three of its points matter more when a whole family depends on one subscription. Audits: "VPN providers can subject their service to third-party security audits, with results which are then made public." Surfshark's pricing page describes its no-logs policy as audited; for the others in this guide we could not read a comparable public audit, and our audits roundup names who has been audited by whom. Business model: EFF warns that a recurring subscription "will keep charging you if you forget to cancel", which is the pattern every long-term deal in the table follows, so put the renewal date in the family calendar. Expectations: "A VPN is not a tool for anonymity", EFF writes, listing GPS, web cookies, tracking pixels and fingerprinting as the ways companies still track you with the VPN on. EFF also ranks strong passwords, two-factor authentication and software updates as more impactful steps than a VPN, and none of those come in the box.

Children's devices deserve one extra thought. Surfshark's plan guide says its One tier adds a web content blocker that can block certain types of sites across every device on the account, while the Starter plan does not include it; a VPN on its own filters nothing. Our guide to privacy tools for new parents covers the identity side of protecting a child.

Router or apps: which route fits your house

Apps on each device let every person decide when the VPN is on, which matters for banking apps and for services that object to VPN traffic. EFF warns that video streaming platforms increasingly block devices that look like VPN users, and nothing on this page is a suggestion to use a VPN against a service's terms. A router sends everything through one tunnel, including guests and the devices you forgot about, and it counts as one connection with NordVPN or as no connection at all with a CloakBox. Many large families end up with both: a router for the living room and apps on the phones that leave the house.

FAQ

Does Surfshark have a family plan?

Not as a separate product. Surfshark's plan guide says all plans allow unlimited device connections so the whole household stays protected, which is why the Starter tier at $2.49 a month on the 24-month term (checked October 2026) is effectively the family plan. The only limit is the free trial, which Surfshark restricts to 3 devices until the trial ends.

Can a router get around NordVPN's 10-device cap?

Yes, and NordVPN says so itself: the router uses only one device slot while the VPN protects all the devices connected to the network. The trade-off is that everything on that Wi-Fi exits through the same server, and devices that leave the house still need one of the remaining slots.

Do smart TVs and games consoles count as devices?

For any service with a numeric cap, every connected device counts. Surfshark and NordVPN both point console and smart-TV owners to router or manual setups; WiTopia sells the CloakBox router with the service included so that any Wi-Fi device can join without an app.

Is unlimited devices a sign of a weaker VPN?

No. The cap is a commercial decision, not a security property. What matters is whether the provider's no-logs claim has been audited by a named firm, which country's laws it operates under, and whether you trust its business model; EFF's guide and our audits roundup are the places to check those three things.

NordVPN — Independently Audited No-Logs VPN

NordVPN — Independently Audited No-Logs VPN

NordVPN is the most-reviewed name in the category, and the facts are what make it shortlist-worthy: its no-logs policy has been independently audited more than once, the company is operated from Panama (outside the 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangement), and it runs on NordLynx, a protocol built on WireGuard. Threat Protection blocks domains flagged as malicious before they load, and the plan covers up to 10 devices with a 30-day money-back guarantee. We describe features and jurisdiction as published — measure connection speed yourself, since it depends on your line and the server you pick.

Surfshark — Unlimited-Devices VPN

Surfshark — Unlimited-Devices VPN

Surfshark's differentiator is a matter of published policy, not benchmarking: one subscription covers an unlimited number of simultaneous devices, so a whole household or every device you own connects on a single plan. It's part of the Nord Security family (the same group behind NordVPN) following their 2022 merger, runs WireGuard among its protocols, and includes a 30-day money-back guarantee. As with any VPN, real-world throughput depends on your own connection and chosen server, so test it during the guarantee window.
